AI generating a movie

I remember reading an SF story in a paperback anthology way back around 1970. In it, a passenger on an interstellar vehicle watched an endless series of episodes of a story --which was continually generated by an AI. Obviously relevant today, as Midjourney prepares to launch a “video on text prompt” and the writers strike last year. Does anyone remember this story?

“The Last Screenwriter” was apparently written by ChatGPT, which caused legal fights when it was released in early 2024.

More irony than prediction!

It doesn’t answer the question, but I’m going to get this out of my head: every time I return to this post I’m reminded of Mima, the sentient AI in Aniara that tapped into the memories of spacecraft passengers to generate immersive personal VR experiences of Earth.

Aniara is a bleakly mesmerizing and very Scandinavian production. If nothing else, it might make you feel a bit better about traversing the void on Earth vs. a giant cruise ship with no destination.
